Country chart-topper Scotty McCreery to perform Sept. 25 in Mahnomen
Born and bred in Garner, N.C., five-year-old McCreery began impersonating Elvis, his first musical influence, and when he turned 10, learned to play guitar.
McCreery sang in church and school choirs throughout grade school, and at age 15, won “Clayton Idol,” a singing contest in Clayton, N.C.
At age 16, he auditioned for the 10th season of “American Idol” with Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” making use of his country twang and deep baritone vocals, and prompting the judges to compare him to Randy Travis.
McCreery passed the audition, became an audience favorite, and eventually won the competition in May 2011.
The singer’s debut album, “Clear As Day,” was the best-selling solo album released by a country artist in 2011. The album was certified Platinum for sales of one million units in 13 weeks, and also produced two certified platinum singles, “I Love You This Big” and “The Trouble With Girls.”
The success of his debut album solidified him among country music’s upcoming stars, and, in 2011, was named “New Artist of the Year” by the Academy of Country Music (ACM). He also received the “Breakthrough Video of the Year” for “The Trouble With Girls” at the 2012 CMT Music Awards.
McCreery’s follow-up album, “See You Tonight,” was released in 2013 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard ]Country Albums chart.
Before turning 21 in 2014, McCreery also won the “Breakthrough Artist Award” at the 2013 American Country Awards, and “Feelin’ It” became his second consecutive Top 10 hit.
A combination of his boyish charm and deep voice has helped McCreery sell out venues across the country. He is currently working on a third studio album, with plans to release new music late in 2015.
