Girls were trying every trick in the book last night to get to see Scotty...plus the county commissioners, fair organizers, etc. were trying to get their daughters, wives, etc. in to meet him. A few managed to sneak into the m&g area before security got them...then were asked to leave. Most of the relatives settled for the pre-signed photos handed out by security. Irony: he wound up signing merchandise after the show anyway...so all they had to do was buy a Scotty-official item and stand in line.
I'm sure they sold tons of merchandise last night...especially after they announced he would be autographing things...but only the authorized Scotty merchandise. And they repeated that announcement quite a few times.
Fair was fairly small...and had a real community feel. I think that's why the commisioners, organizers, etc. thought it was okay to try to get their relatives backstage, etc. I know this is mean but...they had four very young girls (who were the winner and 3 runners up for a Miss Junior Allegany Co. contest...at least that's what they seemed to announce) welcome the crowd to the show. They had been walking around the fair with their pageant banners/ribbons on. We were wondering why they were wearing the dang things over their shorts and tops...especially the runners up. Well, we found out. Kinda sweet ... but also kinda hokey!
Important stuff:
The setting for the stage, with the hills behind them, was very impressive. Good sized stage...but not really a "backstage" area so the additional instruments, etc. were in full view most of the time. Plenty of room for Scotty to roam. You could see in the photos that they had a double barrier in front of the stage...so there was no way for him to grab hands. Luckily for those of us that had first row seats there was no room in front of us for girls to crowd up to the stage. We had terrific views. I think all of the people in the pre-assigned seating area had excellent views, in fact.
Biggest crowd pleasers: TTWG, medley, SYT, and the two new songs. Shame those people seem to feel it was wrong to stand up during the show (even though, as I mentioned the signs said it was OK). Towards the end of the show, a lot of people did stand -- and Scotty loved it.
Now that I've seen the modified opening with NOW in person...I definitely feel the original version was more impressive. I realize the change was probably made for his set opening for RF...and he can't have two versions of NOW while he's touring, etc.
The young guy next to me was the son of one of the commissioners...whose father had gotten them seats as a surprise. He was in his early 20s...and a lot of fun. Asked him after the show if he had enjoyed the show..said Scotty was very good, and he was glad he'd gotten to see him. Score another victory for Scotty.
Only negative (Nancy will feel my pain): getting out of the Fair was a nightmare. Took about an hour just to get to the street.
